ACTIVITIES Guiding and instructing outdoor activities has great appeal for many seeking a career in outdoor recreation. It can be challenging, demanding and very rewarding - not to mention a whole lot of fun. Here is a taste of what you will experience as a student at Chisholm Outdoor Recreation. Bushwalking
One of the major activity components of the Diploma of Outdoor Recreation, bushwalking teaches leadership and guiding skills, navigation, group management and decision making. Bushwalks are held all over the state and include locations such as Mt Baw Baw, Wilsons Promontory, The Grampians and the Bogong High Plains. Students will experience walks from 1 to 6 days where they must be largely self responsible whilst developing the skills to consider the potential needs of the rest of the group.
Learn to sail dinghies and keel boats. Gain the skills necessary to teach basic sailing techniques. Sailing lessons are held on Westernport and Port Phillip Bay just a few kilometres from our Frankston Campus. We will start you off on small sailing boats learning techniques like tacking and jibing. Practise your skills on real client groups and watch your confidence grow! In the second year of your course you will experience ocean sailing in large keel boats in the beautiful Whitsunday Islands. Canoeing & Kayaking
Canoeing is a common activity used in school camps and is the first activity you will experience.Canoeing teaches good teamwork between paddlers and requires attention to detail to be performed at a high standard. Canoeing skills are relatively easy to pick up and provide a good base for more complex white water kayaking skills later on. Canoeing is a great base activity for practising skill teaching and group management. Commonly used locations include the Yarra, Mitchell, Goulburn and Murray Rivers.
Learn efficient paddling techniques, open water rescues and navigation at sea. Sea kayaking is one of the fastest growing recreational pastimes in the world today. When conducted professionally, sea kayaking leaves no trace and is an environmentally friendly activity. A good understanding of marine weather is required to manage groups safely on open water. Commonly used locations include Port Phillip and Westernport Bay, Gippsland Lakes and Nooramunga Marine Park. In the second year of your course you will experience sea kayaking around the stunning Whitsunday Islands. Climbing Learn top rope climb set ups, safe gear placement and lead climbing techniques. Climbing training occurs mainly at Mt Arapiles and the Grampians NP in the states north west. Climbing involves attention to detail and good technical skills. Learn to set up safe climbing systems including abseiling, top rope set ups and climber rescue techniques. A lead climbing elective in second year will teach you how to negotiate multi pitch climbs and take your climbing skills to a higher level. Rafting Learn to negotiate rapids safely and look after the needs of your client group on multi day expeditions. Once you learn the basics of rafting and raft guiding you
will be surprised how far these skills can take you. Many of our graduates
have worked interstate and internationally. A raft guide must be vigilant
and constantly monitoring his or her clients needs. Rafting can take you
to some beautiful and remote locations. Commonly used rivers include the
King, Mitchell, Snowy and Mitta Mitta River. In the second year of your
course you will experience rafting on the wild and wonderful Tully River
in far north Queensland. |
