Learn personal sea kayaking skills and the ability to manage groups confidently and safely in open water environments

Sea kayaking ( moderate conditions) is described in the Outdoor Recreation Training Package as: (paraphrased)

“covers the knowledge and skills required to control a sea kayak in moderate conditions, plan and navigate an inshore passage and guide sea kayaking clients on day or overnight trips”

This module covers personal paddling skills, self and assisted rescue, navigation at sea, surf skills, defensive paddling strokes, group management techniques and leadership.

Students will experience a basic skills course on Port Phillip Bay (Melbourne) followed by days of training in Term 4 focusing on surf skills, rolling theory and training, extended trips and guiding techniques. Training will take place in Victorian and Tasmanian waters (exact locations is weather dependent).

Pre requisites: Completion of the COLS Foundation Module

Assessment. A combination of written work and practical demonstrations in the field. Attendance on all field trips is required.

*Fee Structure
Funded positions are available to enrolling students who have not previously completed a Diploma or Degree in any subject area. Non funded course prices are available upon request.

Recognition of Prior Learning.

If you hold a Statement of Attainment with the required Units of Competency with a completion date no longer than 12 months prior to the COLS enrolment date a credit transfer will apply at no cost.

If the completion date is 12 months or more or if you do not hold any Statement of Attainment relevant to your specialist activity but have relevant skills or Industry experience you will be required to:

  • Attend the assessment day for your chosen activity
  • Attend a RPL meeting with Chisholm staff
  • Sit a written test.
  • Submit a personal log
  • Submit any supporting documentation
  • Submit third party testimony from employers, clubs etc
  • Pay the RPL fee

To become a Sea kayaking Guide (Level 2) you must……

  • Complete all 3 pre requisite modules: Foundation, Sea Kayaking Skills and Leadership
  • Enrol in the Guide Module
  • Complete your COLS Practical Placement Work Book.
  • Complete a Level 2 First Aid Course
  • Complete all personal Log Book Requirements.
