Has anyone used the SPOT GPS Messenger?
How do you rate it against an EPIRB 406?
Was it easy to use with custom messaging and tracking?
Would it be necessary to carry both a SPOT and EPIRB?
Is the SPOT an adequate replacement for a Sat phone if the Sat phone is primarily to be used to report daily positions and for general safety anyway?

gday i am looking for a template i could use to log my outdoor experience with the intention of using it to present to tafe and other organisations for recognition of industry experience. at the moment i have only got a rather crude note book log and i would like to see what others have been using. wanting to simplify and professionalise it i guess. not sure the best way to post or receive the templates but those with more experience on forums could probably point me in the right direction.

Hi people, just wanted to say g'day to everyone and introduce myself. I'm Owen and I'm from Adelaide, Australia. Born and bred in the Northern Territory originally so a used to be a bit of an outdoor addict (climbing, kayaking, hiking) and worked for Outward Bound for a while but then I went and stupidly got a degree and a job in the corporate world and kind of forgot about the outdoors for a while... I've since left all that silly office stuff behind and now working as a photographer.
Wanting to get back into all the fun stuff that happens outside and get away from the computer so thought I'd start at the forum.
Cheers, Owen

hey im down here on the mornington peninsula in vic.
but pretty much grew up on the Murray river (:

had a few questions about doing a trip down the murray,
first of all was planning to go from either echuca or albury to mildura area.

from echuca to mildura its around 830kms, but without a time limit between their ( just a guess so not forgotten about haha )
but was wondering what would be a good type of kayak/canoe to take on a trip like this?
would be packing light, enough food to last but also fishing/hunting along the way.

was thinking of either a open top kayak or canoe?
normally only take a grill ( well part of a fence bent into a upside down U shape. ) a cast iron pot and a average kitchen pot.
also have a small single burner butane stove. most likley bring it as well lol.

also best way to keep food cool? for what little food want to take that requires coolish temp.
was thinking a eski, should be towns give or take around 3 or 4 days apart so a block of ice should last in a decent eski out of the sun?

normally go camping with family or friends and my dog, who may come along, he doesnt mind sitting in kayaks lol.

daily plan looking something like..
up early for breaky and paddle for a few hours.
during mid day go for a fish in the shade ( instead of paddling through it if i can avoid it haha. )
then paddle some more before camping for the night.
if i can, try set some traps over night make for a nice meal.

i have a list of items thinking of taking, proably needs some refining haha.

bascily want to have canned food/rice/dry food and dog food if he comes haha. to last between towns.
so anything i catch is just extra (:

thoughts on bringing my dog?

anyways cheers 1st post here haha

Hi I have recently started studying outdoor rec and am unsure how to set up and manage my logbooks.

Should I log the practice that I do for climbing, sea kayaking etc. Or do I just log the time when we are taking groups out?
Do I set up a different logbook for each activity?
How do I set them out?
And if I do log for practice time, am I supposed to get that signed?

Any ideas or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

My name is Thiago Silva, 33. From Brazil

I hope you're all doing well. I need your help in tapping into your awesome network of friends to help me win this video contest. I'm a finalist in this Wild Kingdom competition and I need a few thousands of votes. Can you help me make this go viral? I shot all these with my gopro’s while on kite trips and other trips as well. Lot’s of action shots.

Mutual of Omaha launched an online video contest to find their next ‘wild guide’. A friend of mine pushed me to submit my entry and... what you know? They picked me as one of the finalist! I can get to host one of my favorite shows!

Public voting started last Friday and that’s where you can help me. I’ve been bugging friends and family to go drop me a vote. But I need to do more than just ask my friends to simply vote.

So here’s my simple 2 step plan that I’m asking my friends in order make this video go viral. I wonder if you can help me with your vast network. But first watch my video to see if you even like it. I guarantee you will.

1-Ask some close friends to go in and vote. Once today and Once tomorrow. (Voting ends May 23th).
2-Ask each one of these friends to share the voting pitch with just 3 of their own friends.
That’s it! Are you up for it?Also, posting the pitch in your facebook wall, blogs, twitter etc...will help tremendously as well.

Here’s the link: http://www.wildkingdom.com/nextwildguide

Unfortunately, there’s no direct link to the video. They have to go to the site and browse to find my video and vote. But it’s super easy.

You can vote daily. One vote every 24hrs until May 23th. But you can vote from different devices too and they will count. For instance, ipads, phones different computers and even different browsers.
Thank you so much in advance.

Much love,

Thiago
thiago_bahia @ hotmail.com
