G'day,

Perhaps national standards need to be developed relating to OEdders pay and conditions.  There seems to have been a lot of developments in terms of establishing national training standards for instructors and also Department of Education requirements of intructor:student ratios (both of which has increased the cost to the instructor) but nothing to improve pay or conditions for the instructor.

I guess the question of how does this all occur still remains!

I was thinking that the very companies that we work for, which often are the ones that under pay us and over work us, need to come together under some governing body to regulate our pay and conditions.  Is there any government standards relating to award wages in our industry?

i have read part of this topic and it does seem to create pretty picture for potential outdoor ed instructors

especially as an employer there are actually companies out there that are doing something about creating a award system and better working conditions for people

but of course its the companies fault Smiley

if you would like to know more let me know

Hi there
I have been following this for a little while now, and have a look at whats been going on.

As the HR person in a company, I am passionate about improving all of  the above.  At present in our state we have been working on this issue for quite a while now, have been in discussions with workplace services and will be having a working group with some other companies/small businesses in the private sector, should be interesting.

What we are trying to do is put together several options that stanadise pay and conditions (for our state only at this stage).  As it seems to be all over the place, in every state.  This will not be through an award, this being that they are very expensive to formulate and are very '80s.  It still seems that even if you do have an award, some people just don't follow them, i.e. the diving instructor award.

We are working on something called an awa, more up to date, easy to understand and has some flexibility.  Australian workplace agreement.  Several options that employees and the employers can chose from.  This will be put through as an industry standard, that if proffessional bodies want to comply, for insurance reasons they will have to comply with the pay and conditions with their instructors.  I believe most companies have good intentions and are trying to improve, or should be.  But there is only so much you can do as one company otherwise you can outprice yourself out of the market and lose it to another.

One of my goals is not only to improve pay and conditions but also to improve the security for instructors.

Out of interest, if you are a freelance instructor, how many get asked to be independent contractors (no super, workcover, insurance cover).  Do people pay more than usual in this case, to compensate, or just do it dodgey??

Just so you know as well we sometimes just get asked to organise some qualified instructors, not the whole package.  Add on their pay and allowances, super etc.. and pretty much about half of them, turn around and say it is too expensive.  So someone must be taking on the work and getting paid poorly.  I believe that experienced instructors need to educate the uni and tafe students (or the one that just come out) about lifting the professional standards.  You could say that we as a company are competing with young instructors willing to take anything for the experience.

This ultimately affects you guys as the under experienced, underqualified people are reducing your work and your pay.

All people that use our industry are going to have to get used to paying a little bit more for our professional services.  Companies aren't against you, there with you guys, I hope.  If you want to do something educate the young people that are coming out that its a great field to work in, it is a career and not a hobby.  And to get some guts when clarifying the money and responsibilities (the hours and workload expected) before they take on the work.

sphinx,
Great to read such positive, proactive words.  Some would say that my words in the past have been destructive or negative.  I would disagree.  but non the less I have been an advocate of your thoughts on informing the new fledglings on the traps and problems they create by accepting lesser pay etc.
An idea of lobbying the insurance companies to push company policy!
As stated before about the anonymous postings, there are reasons for this.  One day!
get rid of the touchy feely people, get down to the bare tacks of nutting the problems and we may be able to solve the problems.  squeeze the companys through insurance to conform on industry standards and we should have a win win situation whereby the staff will have greater satisfaction in their jobs and that pays dividends to the companys bottom line.  makes simple market sense wouldnt you think!
anyway hope you've all got enough money for xmas travels ??? Roll Eyes

Shocked ??? Sad

After spending about 45 minutes straight reading this topic, i can only say that for the first time throughout the last two years of my CERT IV at TAFE i have begun to have doubts upon the true availability of QUALITY employment.
Now before i am convinced of changing now (no way) i haven't yet read all of the discussion board. I begin to have doubts about wether i want to.
I have been told several times by different people that the available work is there and is ready to be taken.
Am i willing? Y
Am i able? Y
Is it worth it? There is only one way to find out.
If it all is true, i can say that the shine is no longer there, The appeal but not the shine... and that is what brings so many young people to work this industry

Happy office working...
Avalanche77

P.S.   How are the young ones going to get there experience of leading etc, if there is no one left in the industry to pass it on??

Well hello everyone! I just finishing reading the entire topic at once!! Alot of interesting views!
I started a OE Tafe course in 99 straight out of sec college.  Completed the first year then got a perm parttime job as an OE assistant at a school.  Freelanced and traveled for the next year then completed the second year of the TAFE course.  I love the OE field but I consider it a "LIFESTYLE" not a "CAREER".  This lifestyle may suit many.  Also some people can make it a career, dont get me wrong. But for me I was over it.  I now work 8-4, 5 days a week, company car, super, 5 weeks paid holidays for pretty good $$ (more than i could scrape together with 8 group certificates in 1 year).
Through my 4 years within the industry I worked for a ridiculous number of employers and travelled many kilometeres to get to jobs, and sorry i didn't drive a subaru.  would love one though.
Im still involve slightly with the industry as my girlfriend is just about to finish year 2nd year of TAFE.

Ok, I agree with many of your comments but the big thing i think is weird is, this first post by Johnsy was now over 12 months ago and what has happened?  There has been alot of ideas flowing around but nothing has really taken off that i have heard of. If something has pls tell me.

If I come up with any ideas on how to help i'll post it, but I think we need to get the attention of someone very high in the food chain.  not too sure who.

well happy travels!

Hi Speds,
Yes I invested over two years of my blood, sweat and soul setting up and running that entire course. Unfortunately it was for a dysfunctional management within a dysfunctional organisation but it did have it's moments of enjoyment and we also had a few good students graduate from there. By the way Speds you made some good observations in your post like, "Ok, I agree with many of your comments but the big thing i think is weird is, this first post by Johnsy was now over 12 months ago and what has happened?" Nothing, that's what’s happened and that’s why nothing will change. There is no spirit and no fight left within the real workers and none coming into the industry either. It's conform to the status quoi or simply move on to something else like you did Speds, for the company car, the super, 5 weeks annual leave and good $$$.
Cheers,
Johnsy

gday to johnsy & everyone that has written, and read on this notice board. out of interest what state are most of you from?
I have just read a fair bit of this discussion. i have worked in the industry, only around the edges, in both aus and the uk. what has been said is mostly true in my opinion, however it sure beats the hell out of putting small bottles in a cardboard box in a warehouse for 9 hours a day for the same amount of money, or working in a pub from 7 pm to 5 in the morning, breathing in everyone's cigarette smoke and dealing with pissed idiots. and hey if it all goes to @*#! there is always the option of writing a book about how bad it was and how you saved the day, and then retire and spend the rest of your life sitting on the couch watching telly.

Hi Mungo,
Yes you are right it does beat the hell out of putting small bottles in a cardboard box in a warehouse for 9 hours a day for the same amount of money and that's my whole point! You don't have to have thousands of dollars in personal equipment, have tertiary qualifications, Industry qualifications, Wilderness first aid, a bus licence and be directly accountable for your clients physical and psychological wellbeing when you put small bottles in a cardboard box in a warehouse for 9 hours a day but you still earn the same amount of money! You should read Obi One's comments on his experiences with a certain provider and this is not an isolated case. What is it going to take for young people coming into and already in the industry to realise that this is a highly specialised job with immense responsibility that has evolved into a professional vocation. It is not a filler to avoid putting small bottles in a cardboard box in a warehouse or an opportunity to roam around contemplating what you're going to do with the rest of your life. As long as people see the outdoor rec/ed industry this way then some unscrupulous employers will cash in on it to the detriment of clients, employees and the industry in general. As for your other question, I'm from Vic although I have worked in the USA, UK and all over Australia. I think you'll find most posters are from Vic.
Cheers,
Johnsy

I have come into the Outdoor ED indusrty later in life having spent over 10 years in the computer industry. What I have found is that the money and employers seem to drive any industry. As with the Computer industry many employers are out to 'screw' there staff. It is often the larger employers that are doing the 'screwing' too.
Having said that there seems to be a lot of people getting employed who just accept the often very low pay so employers get away with these practices. Although I never expect to get rich quick from this industry I don't see that I (or any one else) should have to live near the poverty line just to do what we love.
I believe I had a large O/D ed organisation was shocked when I declined an offer of employment when I pointed out the real rate of pay over a year to be some what below $20,000. This was going to decrease my standard of livivng some what and I don't believe that there was ever going to be an optiunity with in this company to every get to stage of getting a deposit on a house.
My point is that although there is an abundance of people to work in the industry no one should sell them selves short on very low pay or working conditions. Make sure you have enough money to live on (not just to survive) and a life out side work as well (seven day weeks = burn out, burn outs = costly errors).

Hmmm......

I guess the industry is relative young, however it is so diverse:

- school programs
- adventure programs
- tourist programs
- training programs
- youth at risk programs
- corporate programs

Some of us should try different avenues within the OE spectrum - like a breath of fresh air to rejuvinate the soul!

Maybe there are too many state bodies and not enough national bodies to regulate training and qualifications?

Maybe there is a flood of young, green instructors getting out there amongst it, with little 'worldly experience' and a piece of paper saying that they are an Instructor!

Maybe there is a percieved risk that some of us will be without work in the future, with more courses and degrees in the OE areana making us redundant?

Maybe there are not enough of the experienced, gun instructors with the old fashioned know how out there?

What about the safety to clients, and the welfare of Outdoor Educator's and Instructor's - are all needs being met?

Are outdoor companies and businesses looking after their number attributes - the Instructors?  Some do and some don't.  However it is receptacle, are Instructors doing the right thing by their employers?

All industries have ebbs and flows, and everyone has a whinge about something - However, the outdoor industry in Oz is not too bad.

If the vibe isn't there any longer, it's OK, go and try something else.  Thats how I got into the industry and I dig it!

OK, it doesn't always shine, but the rain makes the grass grow and patience is a virtue.

Anyway - thats my little bit, wish you all the best and hope the new year brings you all good fortune!

Cheers
