Wallaces Hut is on the list of those that were saved.  I have done some x-c skiing in that area and I was very relieved to see that Wallaces, Cope and the Rover Chalet are still standing.  Such a shame about the rest that were lost, I can't begin to imagine the difficulties faced by RFS and National Parks in trying to fight the fires.

As far as rebuilding the huts that have been lost you will probably have to talk to someone in National Parks about that or in NSW the Kosciuszko Huts Association.  I am not sure about NPWS policy on that but I wouldn't be at all surprised if they decide not to rebuild or replace the lost huts.

Cheers,

Hi Warren,

No I haven't been to the Howitt High Plains, only the area around Falls Creek - Cope Hut area.  Being from north of the border I usually ski in the Kosci area.

Cheers,
Evan

Hi Gaby,

I am not familiar with Lovicks or Kings Huts are they in Victoria?

Below is the link to the Victorian High Country Huts Association website which has a detailed list of the huts destroyed/saved as well as photos of most of them.

http://home.vicnet.net.au/%7Evhcha/pages/mainframe.htm

For huts in the Kosciuszko National Park in NSW check out the KHA website.

http://www.kosciuskohuts.org.au/index.html

Hope that helps.

Cheers,

I guess what I have to say is what has been circulating amongst MUMC members, not based on actually having been up there, but the MUMC hut is apparently fine, however the toilet has burnt down. The story goes that fire fighters were actually landed commando style on top of the hut and it was saved.

cheerio

Evan, I'm after any information on Hainsworth hut. Wheather it has survived last year's fires, and information on it's location such as general area or GPS position. It was built by my grandfather when he had a grazing lease. Any information would be appriciated.
                           Thanks Bill.

Good news everyone, well I reckon it is anywayz. One of the huts that was burnt in the Janurary 2003 bushfires MacNamaras Hut on Buckety Plain is up again.  Cheesy

In March this year Mittagundi Outdoor education centre main users of the hut got the all clear and approval from the Victorian High Country Huts Assosciation to rebuild MacNamaras Hut, and so now after many months of hard work from volunteers, Mittagundi staff and students MacNamaras Hut on Buckety Plain is up again and its fantastic, because I was one of the many Mittagundi students who helped with the rebuild. Cheesy

Myself and 13 others were there from April 16-18 to help on a weekend on a Mittagundi follow up course and on April 17th we were the first people to sleep in the newly built hut.
Cheesy
I will try to get photos scanned and post them here, or if you don't live far from Macs Hut go and have a look for yourself. Wink

To me and the many Mittagundi staff, directors and students this is a great thing to have rebuilt Macs Hut coz Macs Hut was and will always be apart of Mittagundi  Cheesy
