Help and Advice
May 12th, 2010 at 10:13am

Hi my name is Will. I have recently arrived in Australia, Melbourne Victoria to be exact, from Scotland. I am a very keen outdoor person and love to hill walk. I am not qualified in any outdoor areas but it has long been my wish to be so and work in an outdoor environment, be it attached to an outdoor centre or assisting instructors.

Please could someone give me some advice as to what is out there for me (preferably close to Melbourne that i could get to) so that i can try to begin a career.

I am currently on a working holiday visa but i am in the process of applying for a Partner visa so as to say and work properly.

i very much look forward to any response!

best wishes,

Will

Hey Will,

Probably a good idea to approach Outdoor Ed companies and ask for some work experience/ placement. However, to obtain work in the industry you need some basic qualifications:
- 1st aid cert. (remote area or wilderness is highly recommended)
- working with children's check
- qualifications in certain activities- Canoing, climbing, etc. (either through a TAFE or independent organisations. Eg. Holmesglen, Chisholm, Canoe Vic, Australian Climbing Instructors Association, etc.)
- driver's licence

Good luck!

..and it's always good to get some experience from national parks. If you're willing to work a short while without pay I'm sure they will be happy for some free help. That will look good as a reference at least.

Take a look at our website for a course near you:  www.equip.com.au.

Hey everyone, Thanks so much for responding to my thread! i want to appologise for not having replied to you sooner!

I am taking your advice Muddy and starting my drivers licence, have been doing some indoor climbing. Im stuffed when it comes to study because my visa will not allow me to study even when paying for it...

I have to change my visa to a partner one soon hopeful which would then enable me to get to a TAFE and get a cert or two under my belt.

In the mean time im reading the British climbing leader training course book and trying to sort my strength out.

as i said thanks so much for responding. If i can volunteer in a national park i will and as for Amanda thanks for the info - i will get on to that but as my partner visa is costing me $2500 ill have to buy that first lol

best wishes to all of you,

Will
