Im planning on hiking to the source of the Murray along cowombat flat track in early september, does anyone have any advice, re- what weather conditions to expect, track conditions, should it be attempted etc.
Cheers Undecided

I've only ever been in that area in Summer (Feb) but we still had snow near Seaman's Hut.
In other words, it can get bloody cold up there, especially in September. I would recommend against it unless you are a very experienced bushwalker.
Correct me if I'm wrong but the fact that you are asking if it should be attempted makes me think you might not have enough experience just yet.
In 2002, the tracks around Mt Pilot were easy to follow (fire trails designed for 4WD) Off-track was altogether different: scrubby and hard going. All this might have changed since the fires, I'm not sure...

Did some walking up around mt pilot last year (2009) in June. Yep, there was snow and it was FREEZING, but had no real problems navigating on or off track.

If you are experienced in walking in other areas with similar conditions (other parts of the main range / vic high country / overseas / etc.) you shouldn't have too many issues.

Just remember though that if the weather turns foul and an incident occurs, evacuations will become difficult. Believe me - I know. I would definately be walking in a group.

Hope this helps. Good Luck!

Mark
