Hammocking is the goods for overnight trips....
Jul 7th, 2011 at 12:59pm

Howdy folks....

Just thought I'd share some comfort tips for any overnight adventure that you are considering...

On a recent trip in Soth West Tassie, we were looking at ways to cut down on bulk & get our bums off the cold, wet and rough ground.......so we sampled some lightweight & portable hammocks & they worked a treat....so we thought we'd give them a plug so that you may consider them (because as far as we know its not very common?).

The hammocks we used and highly recommend(Hammock Bliss - single) are very compact, comfortable, strong and lightweight....made for bushwalking and the outdoors. Ours is the size of about half a football and weigh 485 grams (but there is lighter version). Best of all they are quite cheap.

It cut down our bulk as it allowed us to leave our thermorest & tent behind as we happily slept in hammocks under a new non bulky tarp (from wilderness equipment). Obviously, we were open to the elements/ wind....but that was no comcern with our 4 season sleeping bags (the wet ground may have been colder anyway?).

Anyways......some food for thought that may have you happily snoring for your next trip

P.S - we used some thin cordellay/ prussik cord as length extensions on each end of hammock, set up in a 3:1 mechanical advantage as an easy setup.

I tried camping out in Tassie in a hammock and 4 season bag but found my back getting cold resulting in some pretty average sleep. I used a hennesy hammock asym that time.

Also camping with the bliss hammock on a 500km hike and bike from Port Douglas to Cooktown and back. I found it would force my shoulders forward if I slept on my back because of the norrow nature of the hammock when tied between two points. Again resulting in an average nights sleep.

I rate hammock camping have always done it. particularly in the tropics and with the bliss hammock as it allows u to add and remove the bits u don't need tarp, or mozzy net/cocoon etc. Plus its cheaper  Grin

If some one has ways of rectifying any of the issues i spoke of please get in touch.

I always find sleeping diagonally across the hammock to be far better for your back as it keeps your spine straight.

You don't even need to go camping to enjoy a hammock, although it's always better away from crowds. Just find a nice park or in your backyard throw up a hammock and lay back  Smiley
