Snowy release vs flood
Mar 8th, 2012 at 9:03am

Hey guys,

Got these photos emailed to me the other day. Same section of river from Jack's lookout.
And to think the release was one of the biggest in Australian history and supposed to mimic the effects of a flood...

Hey mate, was wondering if u knew when these photos were taken?
Is the 1st one a hydro "flood" release? Or just
Normal flows?
Cheers

The first one is an environmental release to simulate flood conditions and purge the river of its sediment overload, apparently.
While we're on the topic of the Snowy, we did it last weekend at 3.5m @ McKillops and I'd highly recommend it: big waves, no rocks. Only two rapids, Washing Machine and Gentle Annie, needed closer inspection to avoid some meaty holes. Otherwise all good and only took a day.
Get on it.

Very interesting graph. According to that, the peak flood was 'only' about 2.5 times bigger than the peak release. It looks like a much bigger difference in the 2 photos.
The peak of the release was October 12 but the photo of the relase was taken on October 18. Not sure how long it takes for the water to get from Jindabyne (point of release) to the Barry way (photo), but 6 days seems like a lot. Distance is about 150kms, which would mean an average speed of only 1km/hr over 6 days. That sounds a bit slow to me.
So it is possible that the photo of the release was at a slightly lower level than at its peak (the peak had already passed that spot).

That flow comparison graph shows the levels at Dalgety, which is something like 100km upstream of where the photo was taken, so there are a bunch more tributaries which would contribute flow.  I'd say the second photo could double that flow, given how widespread the rainfall was, so maybe the total flow is 70,000 ML/day.

The water takes about 2 days to get down to that part of the snowy from Jindabyne, so the first photo is probably 6000 or 7000 ML/day, so it could be that there is 10 times as much water in the second photo as compared to the first (still seems like a low multiple though).

The flow at Dalgety is all spill from Jindabyne Dam, which apparently has never happened until this recent rain.  One thing is for sure, Snowy Hydro are laughing their arses off, all the way to the bank with all the government money they were paid for the water they let out last October.
