Cracks around screws on boat
Jul 21st, 2012 at 3:27pm

I've got an annoying little crack at one of the screw points on my boat. I keep filling it with araldite, but it doesnt last long before it comes off, I think mainly due to the small amount of movement that the crack has made...
Any Ideas on what to fill it with?? Would be much appreciated Smiley

I had the same thing happen to my boat until the crack grew that it actually became a problem. Best to get it plastic welded, will only cost about $20-30 i'd say.

Once you got it welded, I'd strongly recommend using a very wide washer to spread the load over a larger area. Having a soft rubber washer underneath a metal washer will also help look after your plastic by avoiding pressure points.

Oh yeah cool, good idea thanks.

How would you get a wider washer on that though its pretty much flush with the edges of the hole ?

If all else fails try some sikaflex (flexible adhesive/sealant) - used it instead of plastic welding to fix a large crack in the bottom of a boat to good effect.

Hard to tell exactly without seeing the boat. I'd probably just get a longer screw so it sticks out more, and have the washer sit outside the hole (covering it) and directly on the hull rather than inside the hole. You might have to shape/bend the washer a bit so it molds to the shape of the hull, too.
If that works, I'd also do the other side as a preventative.

Before it is plastic welded, drill a hole into the ends of the cracks, known as a stop crack hole, this relieves the pressure. In the short term drill out he ends to stop the crack now. It it can be a very small drill hole, then just fill that with epoxy if so desired.      Grin

Looks like a design fault. Alot of boats suffer from this cracking around a bolt, it normaly means there's to much weight or movement for the anchor. You could disconect the frame from the shell and just fill the hole it will just float there by itself . Thats what I did and its fine.

That’s what happens when you buy a BlissStick. I owned a RAD once. Great little boat to paddle but the plastic was thin as an ice cream container … absolute rubbish. A mate bought a Mystic which seems to have much thicker plastic but he end up putting a split in it on an easy grade 3 on the Nymbo. I wont ever touch one again.

Hmm the weld didnt last long its already cracking apart. The plastics don't look like they've fused together...

Happy were you saying to take the brace out on the inside? Because (at least on my boat) the brace on the inside holdes the seating rail in place?
