Course Overview

Our commitment is to provide the finest quality outdoor education leadership
and technical skill training. Our course is from the industry endorsed
National Outdoor Recreation Training Package.

White Water Kayaking.Within Victoria we have fantastic diversity of landscape.
We work in the snow covered high country, from Lake
Mountain to the Bogong High Plains, the white water
rivers of SE Gippsland, the rugged bushlands and the
rocky crags of the Grampians and Mt Arapiles.

We begin the course with fundamentals, making sure
that everyone understands the basics before moving on
to more complex challenges. As the course progresses,
new and more sophisticated skills are taught. The
program is intensive as there's a lot to learn in a short time. The practical aspects are supported
with course notes, theory days, workshops and ongoing evaluations.

You will develop judgement, hard skills and prudent safety standards, as well as the
interpersonal skills required to teach and lead others in the outdoors. And you will gain new found
confidence for your own future adventures.

The majority of our instruction is hands on - learning by doing. Learning is always immediately
relevant. You'll learn how to climb by climbing, learn how to paddle white water by running rapids,
and learn about yourself and the natural world through the sum of such experiences. Then, in
turn, be able to share it with others and guide them through safely.

All activities are sequential, starting with basics, then building until a competent level is reached.

Concurrent Study

The course provides the option of completing additional requirements concurrently or completing further study on completion.

Whilst completing the Diploma of Outdoor Recreation at Swinburne University, you may be
simultaneously enrolled in the required Education subjects at Victoria University. Flexible delivery of these subjects may assist this arrangement. If students are able to complete all subjects concurrently, they may transfer into second or third year of the Bachelor of Education (P-12) - Outdoor Education.

La Trobe University is able to fast track Diploma of Outdoor Recreation graduates through its Bachelor of Arts (Outdoor Education) degree. In most cases, this will enable students to complete the degree in two years and still develop an alternate discipline sub-major in an area of their choice. This is important for those students interested in continuing with a Graduate Diploma of Education in order to gain registration as a teacher.
