The Certificate IV in Outdoor Recreation is a year-long, full-time course aimed on preparing highly skilled outdoor leaders, facilitators, guides and instructors for work in the outdoor recreation and outdoor education sectors. The award winning course has developed over time to closely meet the requirements of the outdoor industry for leaders with a broad range of skills and experience.


The Certificate IV in Outdoor Recreation as currently delivered at Tropical North Queensland TAFE exceeds the minimum requirements of the Outdoor Recreation Industry Training Package. Students develop skills in the broad range of areas required for work in the industry. All students undertake training and assessment in the following specialisations: Abseiling Guide, Bushwalking Guide, Flatwater Canoeing Instructor, White water canoe/kayak skills, Sea Kayak Skills, Conduct High and Low Challenge Ropes Courses and Adventure Based Learning. The Certificate IV in Outdoor Recreation at Tropical North Queensland TAFE includes all units required for industry registration with the National Outdoor Leader Registration Scheme (NOLRS) and Australian Canoeing (AC) in these areas of specialisation.

At the end of the each year Tropical North Queensland TAFE Certificate IV in Outdoor Recreation students are ‘work-ready’. Our students are always in high demand and find jobs easily. Course participants will follow a competency-based training model incorporating significant practical,hands-on skill development reinforced by theoretical resource material.

Tropical North Queensland has an extensive store of specialist outdoor equipment including canoes, whitewater kayaks, sea-kayaks, climbing and abseiling equipment, camping gear, and communications equipment. Outdoor recreation students have access to this specialist equipment during non-class time for personal skill development.

In these days of increasingly de-personalised, online external and flexible study, Tropical North Queensland TAFE retains a holistic approach to outdoor recreation training. The Outdoor recreation teaching staff at Tropical North Queensland TAFE provides face to face delivering of almost the entire course. Tropical North Queensland TAFE has been continuously delivering Outdoor Recreation courses for nearly ten years. A Certificate II course ran from 1997-2004 and the Certificate IV course has been running since 2000. Over 200 students have graduated with Certificate II or Certificate IV level qualifications in Outdoor Recreation.
