The best place to put in is at Coogoorah Park which is a bush reserve and recreation area that was created in response to buried peat smouldering during the Ash Wednesday fires.

Anglesea River. Coalmine Road to the Sea. Copyright 2010. All Rights Reserved.Channels were created to allow water from the River to extinguish the smouldering peat, and the result was a series of creeks channels and islands connected by bike paths and bridges, which have become a popular recreation area for canoeing, fishing, bush walking, bird watching and mountain biking.

It is also an important refuge for native plants and animals. Coogoorah Park contains areas of bush containing native grasses, reeds, sedges, lillies, herbs, shrubs and trees, which are considered endangered within the greater region.

It is also important habitat for animals such as the Powerful Owl, Brushtail Possum, Ringtail Possum, Echidna, Kangaroo and Wallaby, as well as native fish, eels and many species of waterbird.
