Would you like to turn the great outdoors into your own office? The Certificate IV in Outdoor Recreation at TAFE Queensland East Coast could turn your passion into a career. Many different employment opportunities exist within the outdoor recreation industry, particularly in relation to leading adventure activities for school-aged children. By completing this program with a quality government provider we will equip you with all the skills you need to pursue a career in this exciting industry.

You'll learn about

  • Guiding flat water canoeing
  • Guiding bushwalking in tracked and easy untracked areas
  • Conducting and supervising high and low ropes courses
  • Leading and facilitating teams
  • Search and rescue
  • Responding to emergency situations
  • Managing risk during outdoor activities

This program is delivered with a significant amount of practical training in the outdoors and is combined with on-campus classes, online and workbook activities and work experience. You will spend multiple nights out on field trips participating in and learning about outdoor activities and leadership.

This program is structured to complete the first semester full-time followed by a part-time second semester. This will allow you to pursue paid work in the outdoor recreation industry while you complete your studies in the second semester

Career prospects:

As a graduate of this program you may pursue a range of career options that include, group leaders or adventure guides in outdoor recreation centres school camps, adventure tourism companies, tourist resorts or specialist activity instruction (e.g. canoeing, high ropes). There is a high demand in the industry for trained instructors in this field.
